Anna Wintour

“It’s always about timing. If it’s too soon, no one understands. If it’s too late, everyone’s forgotten.”
-Anna Wintour-

For everybody who loves fashion, they must make sure themselves to know Anna Wintour, at least to ever have a glimpse of reading about her. A jaw-drop is even worth it when it comes to this fashionably powerful woman.

Anna Wintour is well-known for her position in American Vogue as Editor-in-Chief. But pretty long before, her involvement in the world of fashion was started since she was 15 in Biba Boutique in London. Knowing her age now is almost 64, I dare say she's created and fated by God for and only for fashion. Her very first career in fashion journalism was in Harper's & Queen in London as editorial assistant.

Create your own style, let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.”

As for in New York, she began her career as a Junior Fashion Editor of Harper's Bazaar in 1975. Afterwards, Anna Wintour moved from one magazine to other magazines as fashion editor: Viva, Savvy, New York. In Viva, it was the first time for her to have personal assistant and it started her famous reputation as a difficult boss.

Her first job in Vogue was as a first creative director of American Vogue and there she made some changes to the magazine. In 1985 she became the Editor of British Vogue which she gained the title "Nuclear Wintour" because she replaced many staffs and attempted to exercise her very own ideas in the magazine.

"I want Vogue to be pacy, sharp, and sexy, I'm not interested in the super-rich or infinitely leisured. I want our readers to be energetic, executive women, with money of their own and a wide range of interests, " she told the London Daily Telegraph. "There is a new kind of woman out there. She's interested in business and money. She doesn't have time to shop anymore. She wants to know what and why and where and how."

“There is something about fashion that can make people really nervous.”

The 'dictatorship' of Anna Wintour didn't stop there. in 1987 she did a big makeover for Home & Garden magazine, causing some problems to the magazine. Not long after, she finally became the editor of American Vogue, and she was placed atop the editorial masthead with all the freedom, not to mention financial backing, that she needed to revitalize the publication. She was chosen to revive the glory of Vogue against the magazine's competitors: Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Mirabella.

Wintour was the first editor of Vogue to use the less well-known model for coverage, and combined the high fashion with the inexpensive clothes. She also preferred to use celebrities for the magazine's cover knowing its effectiveness to sell copies.

Her perfectionism has made her to be one of the most powerful people in fashion industry: setting trends, 'anointing' new designers, and even criticizing celebrities and women politicians about their clothing.

Many critics came saying that Wintour was very hard to work for. Many were fired, and many left her because they couldn't stand her. However, the fashion powerhouse she has attained is indeed the result of her demanding personality.

"I am certainly very competitive. I like people who represent the best at what they do, and if that turns you into a perfectionist than maybe I am."
-Anna Wintour-

Now take a look at your closets, thinking of what you wear, they perhaps are the results of what Anna Wintour has worked hard for. Just like politics, even Fashion has history and heroes. Even great designers like Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen owe her their lives for their successful career in fashion world.

“Just be true to yourself, and listen as much as one is able to to other people whose opinions you respect and look up to but in the end it has to come from you. You can’t really worry too much by looking to the left and the right about what the competition is doing or what other people in your field are doing. It has to be a true vision.”
